UCLA Professor Joins Gevo Scientific Advisory Board
Pasadena, CA – December 31, 2007 – Gevo, Inc. announced today that Professor James C. Liao has agreed to join its Scientific Advisory Board. The board’s primary role is to enable the company to leverage the latest developments in metabolic engineering and biotechnology to commercialize advanced biofuels.

As a professor at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, Dr. Liao focuses on developing advancements that speed up the commercialization of next-generation biofuels through metabolic engineering and synthetic biology. Recently, his team developed a new method for modifying E.coli to synthesize biofuel.

“It is a great pleasure to be advising Gevo on how to utilize this new advancement to quickly commercialize advanced biofuels,” said Dr. Liao. “Concerns about fossil fuels, both from a long-term viability and environmental impact, are increasing. Advanced biofuels will be a significant contributor to fulfilling our future energy needs while reducing our impact on the environment.”

“It is an honor to have a scientist with Dr. Liao’s accomplishments on our advisory board,” said Dr. Pat Gruber, CEO of Gevo. “His breakthrough in E.coli modification is an indication of both his talent and passion for making advanced biofuels a reality.”

Dr. Liao has received numerous awards and recognition for his contributions from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and has received honors such as the W.N. Lacey Lectureship, California Institute of Technology; Honorary Epistar Chair Professorship, National Tsinghua University, Taiwan; Troy C. Trotter Distinguished Lectureship, University of Tennessee; and the Merck Award for Metabolic Engineering.

Formed in 2005, Gevo is dedicated to bringing renewable cost-effective alternatives for fossil fuels and chemicals to consumers worldwide. “Our goal is to meet increasing energy demands while reducing our impact on the earth,” said Gruber. "We will accomplish this by converting renewable resources into fuels and green chemicals.” For more information about Gevo, Inc. please visit
